Nigerian Doctors Continue Strike Action, Says Secretary-General

Contrary to previous reports, the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has not suspended its ongoing nationwide strike.

During a high-level association delegate meeting, which commenced yesterday in Abuja, a proposal to end the measure was presented and consented to by voice vote.

However, as NMA Secretary-General Adewumni Alayaki told Saharareporters today, voice votes are not constitutionally recognized by the association. The constitution, as it stands, only recognizes paper votes.

Deliberation at the delegates' meeting continued through the night, with delegates deciding (by way of a constitutionally acknowledged vote) to continue the strike until their demands are met by the Nigerian government.

"The strike continues until the federal government brings back an appropriate proposal to solve the industrial conflict," Alayaki said on the association's behalf.
