Snoop Dogg has been accused of being transphobic after he called Caitlyn Jenner a "science project".

The rapper posted a photo on his Instagram account to promote singer Akon's new initiative in Africa.

The meme said: "Shout out to Akon. He is about to supply 600 million Africans with solar power. Im really upset that this isn't major news but that science project bruce jenner is #society (sic)."

Jenner revealed her transition from man to woman on the front cover of Vanity Fair magazine earlier this week.

But Snoop seems to be unhappy about the attention the story has garnered.

While the artist had some support for his meme, most people criticised him for his insensitive comments.

One user wrote: "Disgusting. Why is there a need to bash someone in order to applaud someone else?"

A clip from Jenner's new reality show I Am Cait had more than 4.5 million views in 24 hours.

ESPN has announced that the former Olympic champion is to be honoured with the Arthur Ashe courage award at their ESPY awards on 15 July.

But this has also caused controversy, with Tom Cruise's son Connor among the critics.

E! News reported that the 20-year-old went on a Twitter rant, which he subsequently deleted, saying: "Really?? Winning the AA award for courage?? Ashton is gonna come out and yell PUNK'D.

"Don't get me wrong. Do what you feel like doing and don't let anyone stop you. But everyone is taking this way too seriously.

"There are so many more important things that should be talked about…And SO MANY MORE IMPORTANT PEOPLE that actually deserve an award."

Connor Cruise clarified his comments to his 18,000 followers with a further tweet which said: "Totally twisting what I said, if you read what I said I totally support being happy and am glad she is happy."
