The South East Governors' Forum has commended delegates at the
ongoing constitutional conference in Abuja for their
unanimous recommendation that an additional state be
created for the zone to bring it at par with other geo-
political zones of the country.
The Chairman of the forum and Abia State Governor,
Chief Theodore Orji, in a press statement made available
to newsmen in Umuahia, saluted the courage of the
delegates in adopting the recommendation which
he added, is a major step towards ending decades of
political injustice and marginalization against Ndigbo.
The statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary,
Charles Ajunwa, also commended the confab for
recommending the creation of more new states from the
existing ones across the country, saying this will help
correct the imbalance and lopsidedness in state
creation supervised by the military.
According to the statement, "this bold step of the
conference will also help to diffuse tension in the polity
as well as fast track grassroot development".
"We also commend the leadership of the conference as
well as the delegates for their maturity, patriotism and
peaceful disposition in conducting the affairs of the
confab". the statement said.
The governors, therefore, called on the National
Assembly and other relevant stakeholders to support the
recommendation, and to synergise on making the
outcome of the confab a working document in the overall
interest of Nigeria.
The South-East governors restated their faith in the
conference and called on all Nigerians to be united in
adopting the final outcome of the exercise as a way to
move the country forward.
The governors also reiterated their unflinching support
for President Goodluck Jonathan especially for his
courage in organizing the conference despite pockets of
oppositions, saying that the recommendations of the
confab so far on key contentious issues in the country
have vindicated the President's action.
